Evening of Life

Some of my friends in NRIPA use a very trite, common place and oft repeated phrase “evening of life” for the phase of life in which most of us are. Is it really an evening of our life? If so, then it will be followed by a night implying complete darkness and a full stop, which is the end of all life and raises the question what happens after death. Is there life after death is a fundamental question that none of us escapes. As we grow old or suffer the loss of a loved one, this question commands our attention.

The question of evening of life is connected to the question of what happens after life and has been answered by metaphysics, philosophy, religions and even laymen and yet there is no definite answer, though there are two broad traditions to tackle this question. They can be categorized as Eastern and Western traditions.

The Eastern tradition would include the metaphysics, philosophies and religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, and the Chinese traditions, while the Western tradition may include Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Throughout the history the great religions have provided answers to the question, Is there life after death, and if so, what is it like? These answers are embodied in the rituals related to death in both the traditions.

Let us first analyze the answers embedded in the Western traditions. Judaism’s answer to the question what happens after death is foundational for Christianity and Islam as this is the first religion within the Western tradition. Judaism is unique in starting with the view point that there is no survival after death and hence immortality is only through one’s children. The idea of bodily resurrection becomes common in the Western religions that came after the first phase of Judaic traditions. Salvation, in terms of resurrection is made possible for Christians by Jesus’ own resurrection. For most Christians there is an afterlife and its nature is spiritual. What happens after life therefore falls in the realm of spirituality.

Like Judaism and Christianity, Islam teaches that it is God who gives and takes away life. Islam looks at death not as an end but as a passageway from perishable earthly life to the permanence of eternal life in the hereafter, with God ruling both. Though the judgment begins soon after death, no one but God knows when the final Day of Judgment will come when the righteous will be admitted to Paradise, while the wicked will suffer a second punishment of being sent to dwell in the fires of Hell (Gehenna) forever.

In the Western tradition man does not return to earth in any form. Death is the final end of earthly life and therefore old age may be called ‘evening of life’ before the final end of life, which is death.

When we turn to Eastern traditions we find very different ideas about death and life after death. Fundamental to the Hindu view of life is the basic notion that each person is being continually reborn – life after life after life and this rebirth continuum has been going on without beginning. This basic idea life-death-rebirth (karma and samskara) of Hinduism was later adopted and refined by Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. In this view, gods have no choice, humans have free choice, animals have no choice and according to Jainism, plants and atoms of matter, though living, have no choice either.

Now if humans have a choice, they may choose to follow one tradition and call old age as ‘evening of life’ and follow another tradition call it life as it is without a beginning and an end. It is the choice that one makes decides which way we go afterwards.

Being a hardcore optimist, I would like to make the second choice and call this phase of life as the bonus that I have earned after working hard all my life. Following the Judaic tradition, I may like to see my immortality in my children and therefore would like not to relax but to go on working till my body changes to put on the new clothes with more colour, texture and beauty. Who knows you may be reborn and live with the same people, blissfully though without the memory of previous life.

These are tough questions and have been attempted for correct answers by innumerable people and I have no inclination to enter this fuzzy area. I however believe that there are no ‘correct’ answers. All the answers are true within the geography of the mind that is attempting to unpuzzle it.

What prompted me to get into this marshy and slippery land was the fact that during the last one month, I heard a few friends proudly naming this stage of life as ‘evening of life’ and this set me to ponder and reflect on this rather negative view of life that leads to bemoaning and romanticizing our past and loss of the company of our children.

Now that we have done our job as parents, it is time for us to do the job that we have been postponing for a long time: the job of what we always wanted to do. It could be that you wanted to paint, write, swim, dance or just do nothing and enjoy the freedom of being free, which is the ultimate freedom that one aspires for provided one knows how to live alone and within oneself.

As this is the beginning of a new year, let us resolve to live fully the life that we always wanted to live and were not given the freedom to live: a life of joy, satisfaction, fulfillment and contentment. Let this be morning of life and not an evening of life. Wishing you all ‘good morning’ and not ‘good evening’,

While we live in India, some of us are comfortable on their own or with some support of their children living abroad.

Finance is not the only consideration to be in India. We have lived our life here. We were born here, educated, worked here and now many of us are spending the evening of our lives. What we miss is the warmth of our children and grandchildren. We wait for the phone calls, e-mail messages with attachments of latest photos of grandchildren. “Tasveer teri dil mera bahelana sakegi” (Your photo cannot please my heart).

We go abroad to spend time with our kids and stay there generally to help them out in their times of need. Very often to avoid VISA problems, we take permanent residency also. We feel happy to see the material achievements of our children in their homes, possession of cars and all modern gadgets. Yet we miss our home In India. When parents compare their life in India and life abroad, we say often “Jaisabhi Hai Mera chhota Ghar aur mera bharat hi pyara hai.”(I still love, howsoever be my home small and broken, and I love my great India).

My topic should have been rather other way “CONCERN OF INDIAN DIASPORA TOWARDS NRI PARENTS”. NRI Parents are spending the evening of their life as one Family, as part of the NRI Parents Association. They dissolve the loneliness resulting from the absence of their children by sharing and multiplying their joys and diminishing their sorrows with each other.

NRIPA Gujarat Today

NRI Parents’ association is A Social Movement aimed that goes beyond “social interaction” and creates a support system of altruists who will assist each other when needed, just like your own family member would. NRIPA is a family of self-reliant, caring and sharing seniors who support each other with great wisdom. Our members enjoy their social world in India, through NRIPA and the world of their children and grandchildren, when they go abroad and participate in their prosperity and happy moments.

Some of our network activities are:

1. Monthly dinner meets and discussions with guest speakers on current topics.

2. Birthday celebrations, bone voyage send-offs (to those going to their children) entertainment and games etc

3. Picnics and tours at regular intervals, festival celebrations like Garba, Diwali

4. Health care from reputed doctors in good medical institutions and hospitals

5. Ava-Gaman, Sneh Milan, Otla parish, meet every 15 days

6. Help Desk – On matters of immigration, visa, air travel, insurance etc

7. Police Security - Safety of assets and emergency calls 24 hours, with registered Photo identity Card.

Our children the NRI’s that make the Indian Diaspora; need not worry for their parents in India. The Diaspora should instead focus on discharging their duty by extending full support, both physical and financial, to extend the social movement to those who need most and are not yet covered.

Other NRIPA’s we know of:

Pune Bangalore Aurangabad Ahmedabad

Coimbtore Nagpur Vijaywada Chennai.

The opportunity for aggressive growth NRIPA is currently unrepresented in many states and cities. The possibilities for growth are phenomenal, but this can only happen when we make it “easy” to create other NRIPA’s using our experiences and collective wisdom as the blueprint or the DNA for new NRIPA’s. With a view to extend the NRIPA movement we have formed a Confederation of NRIPA’s known as CONRIPO. The goal of CONRIPO is to serve as the parent organization of all NRIPA’s and help spawn new NRIPA’s worldwide. This is where GOPIO can play an important role. We need the help of members of GOPIO to identify places in India where NRIPA can be started, suggest leaders with an entrepreneurship streak who can mentor and coordinate the start of the new NRIPA’s. NRIPA, CONRIPO and GOPIO can jointly help in looking to the interests to Diaspora. For more details on NRIPA Gujarat, please visit our website – http://www.nripagujarat.com .which is more informative, and request to put link in GOPIO NEWS Letter.
