Vadodara, earlier known as Baroda, is situated on the banks of river Vishvamitri. It is the headquarters of Vadodara district.

The city was once called Chandamavati. The city was named so after its ruler, Raja Chandan of the Dor tribe. Raja Chandan fought with the Jains. The capital was also known as Virakshetra or Virawati. The city came to be known as Vadpatraka or Vadodara. Vadodara is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Vatodar’, which means ‘the heart of Banyan tree’. However, it is difficult to ascertain to what lead to the change in the original name of the city. Moreover, the Englishmen referred to the town as Brodera. The name Baroda is derived from the Englishmen’s version of the original name of the city. Furthermore, in 1974, the official name of Baroda was changed to Vadodara.

The Marathas ruled the city till the Independence of India in 1947. Moreover, Maharaja Sayaji Rao III was one of the most progressive Maratha rulers of Vadodara. He is said to introduce a number of civic reforms. He also established many judicial and educational institutions in the city.

Vadodara is linked to all the major towns and cities in India by air flights, trains and roads. The State Road Transport (STC) of Vadodara links it with a number of towns in Gujarat. The STC buses connect Vadodara with the different destinations in Gujarat, northern part of Maharashtra and western region of Madhya Pradesh. Besides, the airlines connect the city with Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad. The city falls under Western Railways in the broad gauge line between Mumbai-Delhi and Mumbai-Ahmedabad. Vadodara is connected with a number of trains to different parts of India.
